⚓️ Thinking about installing a watermaker on your boat?

Here are a few key points every boat owner should know before starting:

✅ Seawater inlet: Choose a scoop-type inlet that stays underwater at all times. On sailboats, place it midships near the keel; on fast motorboats, further aft midships. This keeps suction pressure stable and prevents air from entering the system.

✅ High-pressure pump: This is the noisiest component of any watermaker. Mount it on a stiff base that’s decoupled from the hull, and keep it away from living areas. The engine room can work if there’s proper ventilation and temperatures stay below 40 °C.

✅ Where to install: Common options are the V-berth or the aft cabin/engine room combination. Both reduce noise in the saloon and cockpit while making use of less practical spaces. Always consider accessibility, hose length, and noise reduction.

Sediment filters: small parts with a big impact 💧
�They trap sand, silt, algae and debris before they reach your pump and RO membrane — protecting performance and preventing costly downtime.

What to know:
�1️⃣ Why they matter – Protects the membrane & pump, improves efficiency and leads to fewer repairs.�
2️⃣ Filter types – Spin-wound (depth) for high dirt holding with low pressure drop, Melt-blown (depth) for finer, more efficient filtration, and Pleated for low pressure drop and easy washability/reuse.
�3️⃣ Efficiency & fit – 📊 “Nominal” filters capture ~70–95% vs. “Absolute” up to ~99.9% - A big difference worth knowing about. Nominal Filters are typicall fine but make sure you buy a high quality. Sizes : Typicalls sold as 10“ there are actually two common sizes : 9¾″ and 10″ - make sure you buy the right size for a proper fit – Typically 9 3/4" is the standard in high quality filters.
�4️⃣ Maintenance – Check before long trips and carry enough spares, replace when dirty/black or the feed pressure indicates it. Pro Tip : Dont forget to clean the housings as well and flush the watermaker after each use.
