What is tungsten carbide ball
Tungsten Carbide Ball: commonly known as tungsten carbide sphere, hard alloy ball, refers to a ball made from WC powder with binders like colbalt, nickel, etc..

TC ball is famous for its high hardness, wear resistance, corrosion resistance, and bending resistance. Therefore, it’s ideal for applications where extreme conditions must be served.

02 Grades of tungsten carbide ball
Miller carbide provides two series of different grades for selection depending on the different applications of tungsten carbide balls. In request of more wear-resistance, we suggest to use WC-Co grades. The binder contents between 6% and 25% and grain sizes range from 0.4 to 3 μm. Below table shows the wear resistance as a function of the cobalt content.

In most corrosion-wear situations, an optimum choice is the WC-Ni grades, which are resistant down to pH 2 to 3. These grades retain WC as the hard phase and substitute Co for Ni; thus, they exhibit mechanical and thermal properties similar to those of the WC-Co grades.

03 Classifications & Applications
Tungsten carbide balls including carbide balls as sintered and finished carbide balls are classified by the surface finish level.

Extremely good wear resistance and dimensional stability make tungsten carbide balls the preferred choice for grinding/milling media, precision hydraulic valves, high-load bearings, ball screws, linear bearings in slideways, gauging and checking instruments, and meters.

06 How to make sure your carbide ball is not ‘fake’?
The tungsten carbide balls’ weight can be calculated by the following formula.

weight(g)=4/3 R3 x Density x 1/1000

=4/3 X 3.14x(D/2)3 x Density x 1/1000

=4.1866x(D/2)3 x Density x 1/1000

=0.5233X D3 x Density x 0.001

i.e. what’s the weight of the 10mm tungsten carbide balls with grade MC6 (Density:14.8g/cm³)?

Weight of 10mm tungsten carbide ball=0.5233×10³x14.8×0.001=7.7g

If the ball is less than the calculated weight, there is a highly risk that the ball is made from recycled or other material rather than tungsten carbide.

High hardness and dimensional stability make tungsten carbide balls the preferred choice for precision hydraulic valves, high-load bearings, inertial navigation systems, ball screws, linear bearings in slideways, gauging and checking instruments, and meters. Tungsten carbide balls are also used for ballizing, to work-harden and improve fretting fatigue strength.

Characteristics
Tungsten carbide balls are ideal for applications where extreme hardness must be accompanied by high resistance to wear and impact. They are well-suited to elevated temperatures, corrosion, humidity, abrasion, and poor lubrication conditions. Hartford Technologies’ standard material is made of 94% tungsten carbide and 6% cobalt binder, the industry code is C2 tungsten carbide.
