๐ง Industry Challenge: Why Does a Mud Motor Work Normally at First but Lose Torque After Operating for Some Time?
During drilling operations, when a mud motor experiences unstable speed, abnormal differential pressure, or reduced output torque, many people initially assume that the problem is caused by product quality.
However, the actual cause is often a mismatch between the stator elastomer and the operating conditions.
Downhole temperature, drilling-fluid type, oil content, salinity, and differential pressure can all affect the performance of the stator elastomer. The elastomer may swell, soften, or wear, changing the fit between the rotor and stator.
If the interference is too tight, it may cause:
๐น Higher starting pressure
๐น Increased operating resistance
๐น Localized stator overheating and elastomer damage
If the clearance is too large, it may result in:
๐น Increased internal leakage
๐น Reduced output torque
๐น Unstable speed and differential pressure
๐น Lower motor efficiency
How do we address this?
Before production, we confirm more than just the mud motorโs outside diameter and connection thread. We also collect information about:
โ๏ธ Downhole operating temperature
โ๏ธ Drilling-fluid type and composition
โ๏ธ Expected flow rate and operating differential pressure
โ๏ธ Bit size and required output torque
โ๏ธ Well section and formation conditions
Based on this information, we select a more suitable stator elastomer compound, rotorโstator interference fit, and motor stage configuration.
After assembly, we also inspect critical dimensions, sealing fit, and overall operating condition. This helps minimize the risk of discovering a mismatch only after the motor arrives at the drilling site.
A mud motor cannot always be replaced simply because the model designation is the same. Stable downhole performance depends on the proper matching of product design, materials, and actual operating conditions.
If you are currently using a mud motor, send us your operating temperature, drilling-fluid information, flow rate, differential pressure, and bit size. We can help analyze the application and recommend a suitable configuration from a manufacturing perspective.
