Shipping Guide for New Importers: Why Express is Best for Small Tactical Patch Orders
Starting your journey as a brand owner or gear enthusiast is an exciting time. Whether you are sourcing high-quality pvc patches for outdoor gear or detailed military patches for tactical apparel, understanding logistics is key to protecting your profit margins.
When placing a small-to-medium order (around 50kg) with Quanzhou Jarler Bags Co., Ltd., you might be tempted by the lower “base rates” of sea freight. However, for newcomers, International Express (DHL, FedEx, or UPS) is almost always the better choice. Here’s why we recommend it for your next batch of custom gear.
1. The Convenience of Door-to-Door Service
As a dedicated custom patch factory, we want to ensure your custom patch order arrives safely and quickly. Express shipping is a “set it and forget it” solution:
Direct Delivery: The courier picks up your morale patches or tactical patches from our facility and delivers them directly to your warehouse or home.
Simple Customs: Express carriers handle customs clearance using their own professional brokers. You don’t need to find your own broker or navigate complex paperwork.
Speed: In a world where trends move fast, getting your laser cut patches in days rather than months gives you a competitive edge.
2. Beware of the “Fixed Costs” in Sea Freight (LCL)
Sea freight (Less than Container Load) is often a “trap” for small shipments because of how the fees are structured.
Minimum Charges: Most sea shipments have a minimum 1 CBM (Cubic Meter) charge. Even if your box of patches is small, you pay for that minimum space.
Fixed Origin Fees: Before the ship even leaves the port, you must pay for warehousing, customs documentation, and handling. These “fixed” costs typically start at around $450 USD, regardless of how small your box is.
The Math: For a 50kg shipment, these fees can make the cost per patch much higher than if you had simply used Express.
3. Avoiding Hidden Destination Charges
Sea freight is usually Port-to-Port, meaning the journey isn’t over when the ship arrives. As a new importer, you may be surprised by:
Terminal Handling Charges: Fees paid to the port to unload your goods.
Local Delivery Costs: You will need to hire a local trucking company to move the shipment from the port to your door.
Additional Paperwork: Managing the transition from the ship to your warehouse requires time and logistics knowledge that can be overwhelming for beginners.
Summary: Express vs. Sea Freight
Feature International Express Sea Freight (LCL)
Best For Small orders (e.g., 50kg) Large volumes (> 3-5 CBM)
Effort Hassle-free, door-to-door High (requires broker/trucking)
Clearance Handled by courier Handled by you/your broker
Total Cost Transparent & all-inclusive High fixed fees + hidden local costs
