A pickling line is a key pretreatment facility in cold rolling production in the steel industry. Its function is to remove the iron oxide scale on the surface of hot-rolled steel coils by using acid solutions, providing high-quality surface strips for subsequent processes such as cold rolling and galvanizing.
A complete pickling line consists of three main sections: entry section, process section and exit section. The entry section includes uncoiler, leveler, crop shear and welder; its function is to uncoil the hot-rolled coil, level the strip, cut its head and tail, and weld strips together to ensure continuous processing. The process section places the strip inside enclosed pickling tanks, the circulating system heats HCl (or sulfuric acid or mixed acids) to the specific concentrations and temperatures, and sprayed onto and used to immerse the strip. Through both chemical reaction and mechanical action, the iron oxide scale is removed. Then, the strip enters the rinsing tanks and drying units to remove any residual acid and ensure a dry surface. The exit section completes edge trimming, oiling, recoiling and dividing coils, ultimately producing pickled coil that meet quality requirements.

Its advanced automatic control system precisely regulates acid concentration and temperature, strip tension and operating speed, enabling stable and efficient operation. This not only improves the surface quality of cold-rolled products but also reduces production costs. Also, it supports energy saving, reduced consumption and environmental protection, and can be equipped with waste acid regeneration and wastewater treatment systems to meet environmental standards.

As a tension control device used in continuous production line, the three-roll bridle roll set is very popular in metallurgy, papermaking, textiles, and other industries, and functions for establishing, adjusting, and stabilizing strip tension as well as eliminating sagging and off-track of the strip during uncoiling and coiling to improve strip flatness, prevent strip breakage, and ensure continuous operation and high yield of the line.
The device consists of stand, three bridle rolls and drive system, and the three bridle rolls are arranged in parallel, two fixed with the middle one movable via a hydraulic cylinder to adjust the wrap angle of the strip by rapid lifting and lowering. A carryover plate can be designed at the lower part of the middle roll to facilitate threading. Tension is controlled through the output torque of the motor, where variable-frequency motor is used to drive each roll through reducers and universal spindles to change the friction on the roll surface, creating a differential tension between the units before and after the tensioning device as required by the process.

Hot load test of a pickling line is a critical stage of the commissioning. It marks the line steps to the practical production operation from no load test, dry threading, and wet threading, where mechanical, electrical, process, and automation systems undergo test comprehensively. Successful production of the first qualified coil during the hot load test signifies that the line is put into operation successfully.

Strip threading with water in the tanks, also called as water filled integral test, is a critical commissioning procedure following dry threading.
Different from dry threading, which only verifies the physical path of the strip, it introduces "fluid variables" by using clean water to replace highly hazardous acid to examine the entire process media system deeply in a "zero-acid " environment.
Filling the tanks with water enables the operator to simulate the static pressure during production, check the pipeline flanges, pump seals, and tank welds for any leakage, exam and run the automation control logic, thereby eliminating all the potential obstacles for the subsequent hot test.

After full installation of the pickling line equipment, single-machine commissioning shall be carried out. Upon successful single-unit commissioning, full-line linkage commissioning follows, starting with dry strip threading, which is a key operation demanding precise coordination between personnel and equipment.
Dry strip threading describes the operation of feeding steel strip through all equipment, rollers and tanks when pickling tanks hold no acid liquid. Its core purpose is to commission and inspect continuous strip operation in preparation for subsequent acid circulation startup. Conducting this operation under zero-acid conditions eliminates acid splashing hazards, protects equipment against abrasion damage during low-speed operation, and avoids scrapping strips that suffer over-pickling from prolonged repeated stagnation during adjustments. Dry strip threading shall be implemented prior to activating the acid circulation system to guarantee process safety.
