What Causes Spalling in HSS Rolls? Understanding the Science Behind the Surface.

Spalling is one of the most recognized wear and failure phenomena in hot rolling applications.
It is not unique to any specific roll manufacturer. Instead, it is a phenomenon that can occur under demanding rolling conditions if multiple factors interact over time.
So, what happens before spalling becomes visible?
The process usually begins with microscopic thermal fatigue cracks beneath the roll surface.

During every rolling cycle, the roll experiences:
🔥 High temperatures from hot steel.
💧 Rapid cooling from water sprays.
🔄 Continuous thermal expansion and contraction.

Over thousands of cycles, these repeated thermal stresses may gradually initiate and propagate microcracks. When several cracks connect, a small portion of the working layer can eventually separate from the surface—this is what we refer to as spalling.

Fortunately, the risk can be significantly reduced through proper engineering practices, including:
✔ Selecting the appropriate HSS grade for each stand.
✔ Optimizing cooling water distribution.
✔ Maintaining stable rolling temperatures.
✔ Performing timely groove maintenance and regrinding.

Rising Tungsten Prices Are Changing the Roll Ring Market ❗

Recently, the price of tungsten powder has been rising sharply, and the market is still very volatile.
This trend is affecting many alloy materials, including HSS (High Speed Steel). ‼️

Over the past few weeks, several domestic customers have contacted us to discuss HSS roll rings for modular bar mill blocks, including the possibility of using HSS rings across multiple stands.

More rolling mills are starting to re-evaluate their roll ring solutions, especially when balancing cost efficiency and operational stability.
For example, in Ø22 rebar rolling, comparing the same roll ring size Ø304 × Ø160 × 95:

• Total rolling tonnage
HSS ring: 56,000 tons
WC carbide ring: 238,000 tons
• Roll ring cost per ton of steel
HSS ring: 0.25 RMB / ton
WC carbide ring: 0.51 RMB / ton

Although tungsten carbide rings generally have longer service life, HSS roll rings can offer a strong advantage in cost efficiency, which is why more mills are exploring this option.
