Steam seals are typically composed of multiple comb-shaped seal strips. When steam flows through the seal, the presence of the seal strips reduces the flow area. According to Bernoulli's principle, the steam velocity increases, and the pressure decreases. 🔧💨
For example, at the shaft end of a steam turbine, steam coming from the high-pressure side experiences a gradual pressure reduction as it passes through the seal, thereby reducing the amount of steam leaking to the outside. 🌡️🔒
Blocking Effect 🛑
The small gaps formed between the seal strips act as a barrier to the steam. As the steam flows through the narrow channels between the seal strips, it is obstructed by the strips. 🚧
Since there are many seal strips, the steam has to change its flow direction multiple times. During this process, the steam’s energy is continuously dissipated, further reducing the likelihood of steam leakage. 🔄💦
