“The replacement unit is free.”
The installer’s second visit may not be.
Neither is the distributor’s time collecting videos, checking firmware versions and explaining to the customer what happens next.
I think of this as the second bill in Android head unit sourcing—the work that never appeared beside “8-core, 4+64GB, wireless CarPlay and DSP.”
Working between overseas customers and the supply chain in Shenzhen, I want to understand where that work comes from, how much can be prevented, and who owns the rest.
That is the question behind my latest article: Who Pays the Second Bill?
For distributors and installers: which support task takes the most time but rarely gets discussed before an order?

One thing I think the Android head unit industry talks about too little is software ownership.
We spend a lot of time discussing chipset, RAM, screen quality, DSP and price.
But after thousands of units are already in the market, the more important question may become:
Who can still change the product?
The factory?
The solution provider?
The firmware team?
A third-party updater?
And if an update creates a problem, who can identify the affected units, stop the release and recover them quickly?
This is where cybersecurity stops being only an engineering topic and becomes a procurement and business issue.
In my latest article, I look at OTA authority, software supply-chain dependence, lifecycle cost and why buying from two factories does not always mean you have diversified your software risk.
That last point, in particular, is something I believe more importers and private-label brands should pay attention to.
What evidence would you ask a supplier to show before trusting its update system?

Explore Android head unit cybersecurity, OTA update risks, software supply chain governance and the questions OEM/ODM buyers should ask suppliers.

The biggest change in car infotainment may not be a bigger screen or faster hardware — it may be who controls the in-car digital experience.
GM’s latest approach to CarPlay got me thinking about where the industry is heading. As vehicles become more software-defined, the real challenge is no longer simply OEM software vs. Apple or Google. It’s how the vehicle, smartphone and infotainment system can work together without the driver noticing the complexity behind it.
I shared a few thoughts on what this could mean for both OEM infotainment and the aftermarket Android head unit industry.
The real product may no longer be the screen. It may be the integration layer.
Curious to hear how others in the automotive and car audio industry see this shift.

The future of car infotainment may not be about choosing between OEM software and CarPlay. The real competition could be about who integrates the vehicle, smart

A lower purchase price doesn’t always mean a lower product cost.
In the Android head unit business, the expensive part often appears after shipment: compatibility issues, installer time, firmware debugging, returns, technical support and customer complaints.
That made me think about a bigger shift happening in aftermarket car infotainment.
We may be moving from hardware competition to lifecycle competition.
The question for distributors is no longer only:
“What processor does it use?”
“How much RAM does it have?”
“What is the unit price?”
A more important question may be:
What happens after I sell 5,000 units and something goes wrong?
I wrote about why supplier capability, software support, CANBUS knowledge and organizational learning may become more important competitive advantages than specifications alone.
The next moat may not be the BOM. It may be everything a company learns after its products enter the real market.
Would be interested to hear how distributors and installers are evaluating this today.

The real cost of an Android head unit goes beyond purchase price. Explore how software support, compatibility, returns and lifecycle capability are reshaping

Your customer updates their iPhone overnight.
Will their head unit be ready the next morning?
That’s why iOS 27 deserves attention in the aftermarket.
For manufacturers, distributors and installers, there’s plenty to check: wireless reconnection, call quality, navigation audio and steering-wheel controls.
I’ve shared a manufacturer’s perspective on what CarPlay updates mean for product selection and ongoing support.
Which do you check first after a major iPhone update?

What do iOS 27 and CarPlay updates mean for aftermarket Android head units? A manufacturer's view on compatibility, everyday testing and software support.

Installers and car audio dealers: is a volume k**b ever a deal-breaker for your customers?

From the manufacturing side, a single k**b, dual k**bs, side buttons and a button-free screen each involve different design choices. Retaining the steering-wheel controls also changes the discussion.

I wrote about this from an aftermarket perspective.

In your market, do customers specifically ask for a physical k**b—or are they happy with touch and steering-wheel controls?

A bigger screen is easy to put on a specification sheet. How easily a driver can turn the volume down takes more thought. In this article, I look at the renewed attention to physical controls, what Euro NCAP’s 2026 framework actually means, and the design choices facing aftermarket Android head un...
