Every time you frown during another shutdown to replace blades, have you ever considered—the issue might not be with the blades themselves?
As a shot blasting technical consultant working with hundreds of factories daily, I’ve discovered a surprising fact: in over 60% of severe blade wear cases, the root cause is improper shot selection.
In the entire surface treatment process, choosing the right steel shot is a critical step. Here are the often-overlooked details from our case analyses:
1.Hardness Mismatch
In the pairing of shot and blades, higher hardness isn’t always better. When the shot hardness is significantly higher than the blade hardness, each impact is like striking a knife edge with a hammer—micro-cracks quickly form on the blade surface.
The matching rule for blades and shot is: blade hardness should be slightly lower than or equal to shot hardness.
Professional tip: The ideal hardness difference between shot and blades should be controlled within HRC 3–5. This subtle balance is the key to long-lasting durability.
