The most important custom of the Laba Festival is to drink Laba porridge. This special porridge is made from a variety of grains, beans, dried fruits, and sugar, symbolizing reunion, harmony, and abundance. In the cold winter, a bowl of piping hot Laba porridge can warm the body and increase nutrition, making it a cozy way for friends and family to gather.

Greater Cold is the last of the 24 traditional Chinese solar terms. Like Lesser Cold, it also indicates the coldness of the weather. In north China, however, there is a proverb that “It is not rare that Lesser Cold is colder than Greater Cold”, which means that it begins to get warmer after Greater Cold.
Our ancients divided Greater Cold into three periods: the first one is about chicks, the second one is about carnivorous birds, and the last one is about water. When Greater Cold is coming, hens will hatch eggs. Carnivorous birds like hawks and falcons are in a great demand for prey. They hover in the air looking for food everywhere to supplement energy to resist the cold. The middle parts of waters freeze and the ice is the strongest and thickest of the year.

The Lesser Cold, the 23rd solar term of the 24 Chinese Solar Terms, usually falls on January 5th to 7th. After the Lesser Cold, cold air frequently descends to the south and the temperature continues to drop.
