Choosing the right racking components isn't just about finding something that fits your space—it's about engineering a system that survives the daily grind of a busy warehouse.
If you are selecting beams and uprights for a new project or an expansion, here are the 4 non-negotiable factors you must check to ensure safety and structural integrity.
1. Seismic Requirements & Site Soil Class
Engineering for a warehouse in a seismic zone is entirely different from a standard installation. You must check the Peak Ground Acceleration (PGA) values for your specific location.
The Impact: High seismic areas require larger baseplates, thicker steel gauges, and specific anchoring patterns to prevent collapse during an earthquake.
2. Loading Patterns & Deflection Limits
It’s not just about the total weight; it’s about how that weight is distributed.
Beams: Check the deflection limit (usually L/200). If your beams bow too much under a load, even if they don't "break," they can create a hazard for forklift operators during loading and unloading.
Uprights: Ensure the frame capacity accounts for the vertical distance between beam levels. The larger the "unsupported span," the lower the total capacity of the upright.
3. Steel Grade and Finishing
Not all steel is created equal.
The Grade: Ensure your manufacturer is using high-tensile steel that meets international standards (like ASTM or EN).
The Coating: For standard dry warehouses, powder coating is excellent. However, for cold storage or outdoor applications, Hot-Dip Galvanized (HDG) or Pre-galvanized steel is essential to prevent corrosion and structural failure over time.
4. Compatibility of Connection Types
Mixing and matching components from different manufacturers is one of the most common causes of rack failure.
The Locking Mechanism: Whether it’s a Teardrop, Speedlock, or a Bolt-on system, the beam-to-column connection must be a perfect fit.
Safety Pins: Always verify that every beam-to-upright connection is secured with a safety pin or bolt to prevent accidental beam dislodgement by a forklift.

Never guess on capacity. Always refer to a professional Loading Chart provided by the manufacturer. Saving a few dollars on lighter materials today is never worth the risk of a rack collapse tomorrow.
