π Four Key On-Site Inspection Steps After a Level Gauge Glass Shatters
β A sudden gauge glass rupture is not always simply a material quality issue. When investigating on site, the priority is to identify the root cause of the failure so that the replacement does not suffer the same fate.
π 1. Examine the crack origin
First, determine where the fracture began.
Edge-originating cracks: Focus on whether the glass was clamped too tightly or unevenly loaded during installation.
Surface-originating cracks: Look for scratches, impact marks, or other surface damage.
The starting point of the crack pattern often gives the strongest clue to the primary cause.
π 2. Inspect the installation condition
Check the following closely:
Whether the bolts were tightened uniformly.
Whether the glass was over-compressed.
Whether the gasket is compatible and correctly sized.
Whether the glass was in direct contact with metal.
Installation-induced stress can remain locked in the glass and cause it to fail suddenly after a period of operation.
π 3. Investigate the operating conditions
Confirm whether the equipment has recently experienced:
Rapid heating or cooling.
Abnormal pressure fluctuations.
Sudden switching between hot and cold media.
Temperature and pressure transients increase internal stress in the glass and accelerate failure.
π 4. Verify the glass specification
Finally, confirm the following against the actual service:
Working temperature.
Working pressure.
Corrosivity of the medium.
Whether the glass material grade is appropriate for the conditions.
β οΈ After a gauge glass rupture, work through these four steps in sequence: crack origin β installation condition β operating conditions β material selection. Only by identifying the true cause and then installing the correct replacement glass can you avoid the situation where a new glass fails all over again.
