Starter Motor: Definition, Functions, and Applications

1. What is a Starter Motor?
A starter motor (or starter) is an electric motor that initiates the engine's operation in internal combustion engines (ICE). It converts electrical energy from the battery into mechanical energy, cranking the engine until it starts running independently.

2. Key Components
Armature – Rotates to generate torque.
Solenoid – Engages the starter gear with the engine’s flywheel.
Brushes & Commutator – Transmit electrical current to the armature.
Pinion Gear – Meshes with the flywheel to turn the engine.

3. How It Works
- Ignition Key Turned → Battery sends power to the solenoid.
- Solenoid Activates → Pushes the pinion gear to engage the flywheel.
- Motor Spins → Cranks the engine until combustion begins.
- Disengagement → Once the engine runs, the starter disconnects automatically.

4. Primary Functions
✅ Engine Cranking – Provides the initial rotation to start the engine.
✅ High Torque Output – Overcomes engine compression resistance.
✅ Quick Disengagement – Prevents damage after engine ignition.
