Thank you, Jasmine Brar for City Councillor, Waverley West, for taking the time to meet and engage in a productive conversation about the future of public safety in Winnipeg.

We appreciate your commitment to the priorities outlined in our 10-Point Public Safety Commitment and your demonstrated willingness to work collaboratively toward meaningful solutions.

While our endorsement of Nafyia Naso in Waverley West remains unchanged, we are committed to building positive, productive relationships with all candidates and elected officials, regardless of the election outcome.

Our commitment has always been to Winnipeg’s firefighters and firefighter-paramedics, and most importantly, the people and communities we have proudly served since 1882.

Elections come and go. The relationships we build, the trust we earn, and our shared responsibility to public safety must endure well beyond October 28.

STANDING WITH WINNIPEG'S FIREFIGHTERS! πŸ’œ

I had an incredibly productive meeting with Nick Kasper, President of the United Fire Fighters of Winnipeg, L867(UFFW), to discuss the future of public safety, the challenges facing our first responders, and the investments needed to keep Winnipeg safe.

Our firefighters and firefighter-paramedics are being stretched to their limits. As our city continues to grow, we need to ensure our emergency services have the staffing, equipment, resources, and long-term planning necessary to keep pace.

I'm proud to support the priorities outlined in the United Fire Fighters of Winnipeg's 10-Point Public Safety Commitment:

- Restore Frontline Staffing: Increase staffing toward the recommended 1.35 ratio, reduce costly overtime, and build a sustainable workforce.

- Modernize Emergency Response Standards: Establish measurable response-time objectives and update emergency service standards to reflect Winnipeg's growth.

- Strengthen Emergency Response Capacity: Ensure sufficient firefighters, equipment, and resources are available when emergencies happen.

- Expand Fire Prevention: Invest in inspections, fire safety education, and prevention programs that protect lives and property.

- Strengthen Arson Prevention: Improve fire investigations and coordination with police to address deliberately set fires.

- Plan Emergency Services Alongside Development: Ensure new neighbourhoods have appropriate fire protection and emergency response capacity as they grow.

- Protect Firefighter Health and Wellness: Prioritize cancer prevention, protective equipment, mental health, and workplace safety.

- Improve Accountability and Transparency: Provide regular public reporting on response times, staffing, overtime costs, and service performance.

- Expand Medical Response Squads: Work with the Province to expand efficient two-person medical response teams while keeping larger fire crews available for other emergencies.

- Establish Sustainable Long-Term Planning: Build an evidence-based emergency services strategy that strengthens public safety while respecting taxpayers.

These priorities reflect something I strongly believe: protecting our first responders, improving public safety, and spending taxpayer dollars responsibly must go hand in hand.

Our firefighters deserve more than words of appreciation. They deserve meaningful action, proper resources, and a City Hall that listens to the professionals working on the frontlines every day.

Thank you, Nick, and the United Fire Fighters of Winnipeg for the open, constructive conversation. I'm grateful for the opportunity to discuss these priorities and look forward to continuing our work together.

A safer Winnipeg starts with supporting those who protect us.

πŸšͺ Another weekend of knocking on doors!

This past weekend, members of the United Fire Fighters of Winnipeg were back out in our communities, canvassing alongside three candidates we're supporting in the upcoming municipal election:

πŸ—³οΈ Orvie Dingwall for North Kildonan 2026 | North Kildonan

πŸ—³οΈ Re Elect Emma Durand-Wood in Elmwood-East Kildonan | Elmwood–East Kildonan

πŸ—³οΈ Devi Sharma | Old Kildonan

It's been great getting out into different neighbourhoods, meeting residents, hearing what's important to them, and having conversations about the future of our city.

As firefighters and firefighter paramedics, we know how much the decisions made at City Hall matter. That's why we continue to get involved and support candidates who share our commitment to strong public services and safer communities.

πŸ‘ A big thank you to everyone who opened their doors and took a few minutes to chat with us, and to the campaign teams for having us along!

We're proud to be involved in the communities we serve, both on and off duty.

πŸš’ Over the past week, members of the United Fire Fighters of Winnipeg have been out knocking on doors alongside Sigurdson For St. Vital and Jeff Palmer for Fort Rouge - East Fort Garry, two candidates proudly endorsed by UFFW in the upcoming municipal election.

πŸ—³οΈ Why do we get involved in municipal elections?

Because the decisions made at City Hall matter. They have a direct impact on how our fire service is funded, how our growing city is protected, and ultimately, the level of service Winnipeggers can expect when they need us most.

Our members see firsthand the challenges facing our city and its emergency services. We also live in these communities, raise our families here, and have a vested interest in Winnipeg's future.

That's why we take an active role in municipal elections. We believe it's important to support candidates who understand the value of strong public services, are willing to listen to those on the front lines, and share our commitment to building a safer, stronger Winnipeg.

πŸšͺ A big thank you to everyone who opened their doors, shared their thoughts, and took a few minutes to chat with us!

πŸ‘ Strong communities need strong public services, and that starts with good leadership at City Hall.

Mayor Sharilyn Knox, City of Portage la Prairie gets it!

Responsible planning isn’t about cherry-picking reports to confirm an existing bias. It’s about undertaking a comprehensive review of your fire and rescue service, understanding current and projected demands, establishing measurable performance standards, and making informed, evidence-based decisions.

What stands out most is Mayor Knox’s commitment to ensuring these reports don’t simply β€œsit on a shelf.”

Studies and recommendations mean little without action. The real value comes from translating those findings into a multi-year plan with clear priorities, measurable outcomes and sustainable financial commitments that keep pace with community growth.

Firefighters deserve the resources to do their jobs safely. Taxpayers deserve transparency, accountability and responsible long-term planning.

πŸ‘ A round of applause for this commitment to public safety! It’s a responsible approach that larger cities and fire departments across Manitoba can learn from.

A major fire. A neighbourhood at risk. Firefighters held the line.

Early this morning, Winnipeg firefighters responded to a major fire involving a two-storey residential building under construction.

With winds driving intense heat and embers toward neighbouring homes, crews arrived to find an extremely challenging situation. The building would ultimately be a complete loss, but our members were determined to prevent the fire from spreading to surrounding properties.

The first-arriving fire engine established a water supply and began an exterior attack using hose lines and a deck gun. However, the nearest hydrant was unable to provide sufficient water, forcing crews to establish additional water supplies. Another nearby hydrant was found discharging water from its base, rendering it unusable.

Compounding these challenges, multiple responding fire apparatus were delayed by a train at a railway crossing, hindering the initial firefighting attack and delaying the arrival of additional personnel and equipment.

As the fire intensified, the second floor collapsed into the first. Neighbouring homes to the south were evacuated as firefighters worked from multiple positions to protect them from the extreme heat and wind-driven embers. Aerial operations provided an additional angle of attack.

Despite these significant challenges, firefighters successfully prevented the fire from spreading to neighbouring structures.

This incident demonstrates why response times matter, and why having enough firefighters on scene quickly is so important.

National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standards establish an eight-minute travel-time benchmark for assembling the initial full-alarm assignment at low- and medium-hazard structure fires, with a target of meeting that benchmark at least 90% of the time.

Having the personnel and equipment on scene to simultaneously attack the fire, establish water supplies, conduct rescues, and protect neighbouring properties can make all the difference.

Reliable infrastructure, timely emergency access, and adequately staffed fire apparatus aren't luxuries. They're ESSENTIAL to public safety.

We're incredibly proud of our members and the work they performed under difficult conditions to protect the residents and homes of this Winnipeg neighbourhood.
