We are honoured to be the first recipient of the Industrial Energy Challenge award, a $25,000 grant from the Town of Whitby - Local Government and Enbridge Gas.

Looking for ways to cut our energy use has always been important to us. In 2010, we installed rooftop solar panels at our Whitby facility through Ontario's feed-in tariff program, and sixteen years later they are still generating clean electricity back into the provincial grid.

The funds will go toward equipment that increases the efficiency of our powder coating line, which accounts for a large amount of the natural gas we use. Air curtains will be installed on the dry-off oven in early 2027.

For us, that investment reflects a simple philosophy. When there is an opportunity to make our operation more efficient and reduce our environmental impact, it is something worth pursuing.

Thank you to the Town of Whitby - Local Government , Invest Whitby, and Enbridge Gas. You have been great partners in supporting us through this challenge. And to our own team at North American Steel , because initiatives like this only work when people step up to identify opportunities and put them into practice.

Congratulations to North American Steel, a Whitby steel rack manufacturer, on being named the recipient of the inaugural Whitby Industrial Energy Challenge.

Launched by Enbridge Gas and the Town of Whitby - Local Government, the challenge supports practical, locally driven projects that reduce natural gas consumption while improving operational efficiency.

With funding support for an air-curtain installation at its facility, North American Steel is improving energy efficiency, enhancing operational performance, and supporting its long-term competitiveness.

The project demonstrates the value of municipalities, utilities and local businesses working together to advance practical energy solutions that deliver both economic and environmental benefits.

When Supplies moved to a taller building, they had to decide how to fill it.

Their packaging supply business had grown out of a facility in Mississauga, and the new 12,750 sq ft site in Scarborough gave them a lot more height to work with. They wanted as many pallet positions as the building would allow.

Our project representative, Mike Guernsey, put two options in front of them. One was selective racking, the same system they ran before and knew well. The other was double deep, which stores pallets two deep and cuts the number of aisles, turning more of the floor into storage.

They chose the double deep system, which increases the density, while still maintaining good accessibility. We used our rollformed product line, because it had been a good fit in the old building.

The finished system stands 28 feet tall and holds 1,192 pallet positions in 5,000 square feet of racking.

They are still growing. Choosing density now is what lets them stay in this building while they do.

Pallet racking looks like equipment, but it is regulated like a building. Warehouse racking in Canada is legally classified as a load-bearing structural assembly. That means building permits, engineering reviews, and provincial sign-offs apply before your system goes into service.

Skipping that process can mean stop-work orders, voided insurance, and penalties that far outweigh the cost of getting it right from the start.

Bulk inventory can be stored perfectly and still slow the order down because efficient picking wasn't factored into the system.

We moved this client from multiple fragmented facilities to 10,000 pallet positions in a single footprint.

When your business is scaling fast, adding more warehouses may not always be the answer. In fact, for one of our clients in the automotive industry, operating across multiple locations was actually driving up inefficiencies and complicating how they manage their inventory.

The goal was to consolidate everything into one central hub and support their growing customer base.

Our team designed and supplied a specialized Very Narrow Aisle (VNA) racking system. By making full use of the vertical and spatial layout, we removed the need for multiple facilities. Tighter aisles mean less floor given over to walkway and more of it holding pallets.
