This is a simple demostration on why a roof needs the proper support members to function as intended.

When the roof has an unsupported ridge the outward force at the walls needs to be restrained so that the roof does not displace downwards (sag) while under load.

In extreme cases the roof could collapse as demonstrated.

This is a simple yet very clear video.

Please be advised that our previous Covid 19 update is still in place. With the current surge of cases in the Grey-Bruce area we will be evaluating all potential projects on a case by case basis to determine if we are able to be involved.

We understand that every project is important to the individual clients however we have to consider the health and safety of all members of our community.

In response to the ongoing COVID-19 situation The Engineering Company has temporarily suspended all site meetings and construction reviews.

Plan for tomorrows project today!

The one piece of advice I give all my potential clients is that quality contractors are typically booking projects 6 to 8 months in advance with that number increasing to upwards of 12 months depending on the scope of the project. Regardless of whether you are planning on a small addition, an interior renovation, or a large new build you should be completing all the planning and design activities well in advance of when you WANT to begin!

The proper planning will allow you obtain the quality design team, and quality contractor that your project deserves.

Small addition on a classic building in Port Elgin. The Engineering Company completed the design of the single storey addition for the future roof top expansion.

When old meets new the challenges begin.

A large portion of construction is the renovation or addition to older buildings. While it can often appear to be straight forward it presents a very unique set of challenges for the property owner and the design team.

It is a well know fact that the building codes evolve and change with each new version. This means that any building that is currently constructed may not meet the current building code requirements. As one would guess the older the building the more non conforming items will need to be addressed.

A common misconception is that all buildings are "grandfathered" and are not required to be brought up to modern standards. There are very specific conditions where this is true but there are also many cases where buildings are required to do extensive upgrades during a renovation.

If in doubt, contact your building official or reach out to The Engineering Company Ltd. To determine which design consultants your project may need. Delays during construction to bring on an architects / engineer can be substantially larger then if they are consulted in the preliminary design phase.

It is important to remember that the proper PPE is required on any project regardless of whether it is a construction site or not. In this case we were going to complete a structural condition assessment of the existing pier foundations for a house. The inspection was completed in an unfinished crawl space which raised concerns about dust, organics, pests, etc.

Another important point is that this assessment was originally scheduled for Friday July 19th, 2019. After reviewing the forecast it was determined that the humidex of 40 degree's would not create a safe environment so the assessment was moved to a later date.
