For many years I worked as a fire protection engineer before I became an expert in the building envelope. If every unit in the building was mandated with operational smoke alarms; of there was more than one exit/entrance; if the fire evacuation plan would be to leave the premises immediately; if there was a well-maintained sprinkler system; if garbage was not allowed to accumulate in the corridors; if the cladding was non-flammable... this morning would have had a different outcome. The cost of a human life is worth more than any building component. Human safety takes priority regardless of any budget.

I hope that this terrible happening will provoke change that will save future lives. While condolences hardly have meaning, I share my condolences to the community, to those who perished and to the families who survived.
