Use of Lithium-ion Battery
Tohatsu recommends using lead acid type batteries, including “AGM” and “Gel” type, for Tohatsu
outboard motors.
Do NOT use Lithium-ion batteries.
Warranty claims may be denied if the damage on the outboard motor was caused by the use of Lithiumion batteries.
〈Reason〉
Lithium-ion batteries should have BMS (battery management system). This system may shut down
the connection between the battery and outboard motor to protect the battery from damage caused
by:
・Overcharging and deep discharge
・Extremely high or low temperature
・Over current during discharge or recharge
For MFS40A and higher horsepower models, if BMS shuts down battery supply, the engine stops.
Which may result in, unexpected speed loss and control that may cause serious injury or death.
Also, loss of power may cause loss of boat control resulting in an accident.
Lithium-ion batteries require a specific battery charger. The battery charging system on Tohatsu outboard motors is not suitable for charging lithium-ion batteries and could cause damage to the
Lithium-ion battery.
