Start where it’s hottest. Start where it’s simplest. 🐄☀️

The holding pen is often the hottest area on the dairy farm. With high cow density, limited airflow, and cows waiting before milking, it’s a critical place to reduce heat stress.

The good news? It’s also one of the most cost-effective places to start cooling cows.

Research shows that proper holding-pen cooling can deliver measurable results:
✅ 1.9°C (3.5°F) drop in body temperature when cows are cooled before milking
✅ +0.8 kg (1.7 lb) more milk per cow per day with holding-pen cooling
✅ +2.3 kg (5 lb) more milk per cow per day when cows are cooled 30 minutes, 5 times per day

Cooling cows doesn’t have to start with a complete barn redesign.

Sometimes, the biggest impact comes from targeting the hottest moments of the day — when cows need relief the most.

Not all water cools a cow equally. 💧

When it comes to heat abatement, droplet size matters.
Many people assume a fine mist is the best way to cool dairy cows. In reality, mist often stays on the hair coat, or evaporates before it ever reaches the skin. 😟

The real objective is simple: get water onto the cow's skin. 🐄

Larger water droplets have the weight to pe*****te the hair coat, soaking the skin where cooling can actually occur. As that water evaporates, especially with proper airflow from fans, it removes body heat far more effectively than surface moisture alone.
