What We Learn:
Long before the language of modern psychology and governance, Setswana wisdom understood the deeply personal nature of individual experience. While life’s circumstances may be shared—much like the rain that falls on an entire village—the vulnerabilities of each household remain uniquely its own.
This proverb quietly reminds us that although people may observe from the outside, only the inhabitant knows the precise points where their shelter fails them. In other words, commentary is abundant, but true understanding is scarce.
It reinforces a cultural appreciation for humility in judgment and restraint in interference. The elders recognized that unsolicited instruction from distant spectators rarely accounts for the unseen burdens another person carries.
Therefore, wisdom lies in allowing individuals the sovereignty to repair their own roofs—because they alone know where the water truly seeps through.
