Most people think soil is just “ground.”
But in engineering, soil is the difference between a building that lasts 100 years… and one that starts failing in 5.
I came across this visual showing different soil types and their behavior. It is simple, helpful, but also a bit misleading if taken at face value.
* Density
* Moisture content
* Compaction
* Structure
* Stress history
This is why geotechnical investigation is not optional.
Before any serious construction, engineers must understand:
* What is beneath the surface
* How it will behave under load
* How it will respond over time
Because the structure you see above ground is only as safe as the soil beneath it.
In engineering, we don’t guess soil.
We test it.
We analyze it.
We design for it.
That is the difference between building… and building safely.
