Sinkholes are a growing geological threat caused by the collapse of ground into underlying voids, often resulting in infrastructure damage, land loss, and human casualties. Their increasing frequency is linked to factors such as aging infrastructure, historical land use, and climate change.

Globally, several regions are at high risk:

China: About 600,000 km² of karst terrain is highly susceptible to sinkhole collapses.

Iran: Around 56,000 km² (3.5% of the country) is affected by land subsidence and sinkholes.

United States: Nearly 20% of land area is underlain by soluble karst geology, making it vulnerable to sinkholes.

আগুন লাগলে RCC বিল্ডিংয়ের ক্ষতি কতটা ভয়াবহ হতে পারে?
চট্টগ্রাম ইপিজেড এর আগুন, যেটা দীর্ঘ ১৭-১৮ ঘন্টা পরে নিয়ন্ত্রণে আসে। এটি আমাদের আবার মনে করিয়ে দিল, কংক্রিট মানেই নিরাপদ নয়! সিভিল ইঞ্জিনিয়ারিং বিশ্লেষণ কি বলে?
RCC (Reinforced Cement Concrete) গঠিত হয় কংক্রিট ও স্টিল রড দিয়ে।
আগুন লাগলে তাপমাত্রা 500°C ছাড়ালে;
~কংক্রিটের অভ্যন্তরের জলীয় অংশ বাষ্প হয়ে চাপ সৃষ্টি করে, ফলে ফাটল দেখা দেয়।
~স্টিল রডের শক্তি কমে যায় (yield strength 40–50% পর্যন্ত নেমে আসে)।
~তাপমাত্রা অসমভাবে ছড়ালে বিম, কলাম ও স্ল্যাবে বিকৃতি (deflection) হয়।
~কাঠামো দেখতে ঠিক থাকলেও load-bearing capacity মারাত্মকভাবে কমে যায়, ফলে ভবিষ্যতে ধসের ঝুঁকি তৈরি হয়।
✔️আগুন নেভার পর ভবন “ঠিক আছে” মনে হলেও,অবশ্যই Structural Health Assessment (NDT, rebound hammer, ultrasonic pulse test ইত্যাদি) করা জরুরি।

A sinkhole is a natural depression formed when the ground surface collapses into underground voids created by the dissolution of soluble rocks such as limestone, dolomite, or gypsum.

1. Dissolution Sinkhole – Forms gradually where bedrock is exposed or near the surface as water dissolves the rock, creating a void below.

2. Cover-Subsidence Sinkhole – Develops slowly as sediments filter downward into cavities, causing gentle ground sagging.

3. Cover-Collapse Sinkhole – Occurs abruptly when cohesive cover fails and collapses into an underlying cavity.
