Record Falls for Deepest Hole in Tasmania
MMG Rosebery in its pursuit of extending its ore reserves has broken its previous record for the deepest onshore exploration hole drilled in Tasmania at its Rosebery Mine on the West Coast of Tasmania.
The previous record of 2584 metres was set on May the 5th 2010. However, a new record for Hole number 548R of 2600.40 metres was set on May the 11th 2025. The hole was drilled by Tasmanian based drilling contractor Edrill Pty Ltd using an EPIROC CT 20 Diamond Drill Rig. The drill manned 24/7 by 2-man crews and assisted by other crews on site when required.

Corey Jago, Geology Superintendent “This sort of drilling requires a high level of skill, discipline and expertise, this hole at completion was 50 cm off its planned path. Which is an excellent result. The Edrill Pty Ltd team was happy to step up to the challenge when it became apparent, we needed to push past the record to complete the hole.
“The drill hole is part of a major exploration drilling program that commenced in Jan 2022 with a goal to identify new ore in areas previously under explored to extend the life of mine. Hole 548R and others drilled during this exploration program have been helping the geology team to understand the geological boundaries for the ore body and assist in determining where best to focus future drilling”


Prospecting by Macdonald back in 1893 revealed a Lead/Zinc Sulphide Ore Body which was mined intermittently up until 1936
The current operation was commissioned. In 11 years, we will be celebrating 100 years, said Corey Jago

I would like to thank the crew from the CT 20 for the effort they put in Mark Masea, Sam Stolp, Sam French, Dane French, Jeff Limbourn, Glen Quigley and of course the other crews who assisted when we needed to pull 20 tons of pipe out of the hole for bit change and then run back down the hole.
