Low-Cut vs Standard Top Snorkel
What’s the difference?

One of the most frequently asked questions we get is: What’s the difference between a low-cut and a standard top snorkel?

SNEAK PEEK 👀
Nissan GU 5” FATBOY’s - Coming Soon…

This in-depth video demonstrates the differences, advantages, and disadvantages between the two styles.

🔹 Standard Top
Traditional rear-facing stainless snorkel head

When you think of a stainless snorkel, this is typically the design and style that comes to mind.

💚 Advantages

Rear-facing = Minimal debris and water ingress (when designed correctly)
Noise = Typically a little quieter, as the sound travels up and over the roofline (depending on make and model)
Looks = Some people simply prefer the traditional stainless steel snorkel look
💔 Disadvantages

Clearance = Due to the height of the snorkel, this style can genuinely cause clearance issues with roof racks, awnings, sunvisors, and light bar brackets.
🔹 Low-Cut / Tear Drop Top
Stylish low-profile snorkel top
( Created and designed by the JMAX team 2015 )

💚 Advantages

Clearance = A low-cut snorkel sits much lower than a traditional standard top, helping eliminate fitment issues with roof racks, awnings, sunvisors, and light bar brackets.
Looks = A modern, aggressive style that sits flush with the top of the window, giving the snorkel a sleek, compact, and blended appearance.
Water Ingress = This style faces outward towards the road, which can be a major benefit on driver-side snorkels.
Noise = Some customers actually love hearing the intake and turbo sound this style produces.
💔 Disadvantages

Noise = The biggest downside is intake noise for customers who prefer a quieter driving experience. This is an easy fix with our JMAX Snorkel Silencer.

Replace excuses with effort… and watch everything change 😈

We had Lisa from All Terrain Action bring in her N80 Hilux for a 4” Snorkel and Airbox, finished off with some extra purple bits 💜

We removed the factory Toyota snorkel and fully covered the original cutout 🤙

A question we get all the time…
Do our snorkels replace the plastic factory Snorkel?
Yes, they do ✅

- Our 4” snorkel covers the main hole, with one small bolt hole remaining, which we seal with a rubber grommet.

- Our 5” snorkel covers absolutely everything, including all original bolt holes.

JMAX Team

Twin snorkels — do they actually do anything? 🤷🏻‍♂️

Yes. They do!! Here’s why. 👇

There are several reasons why twin snorkels are beneficial for your vehicle, especially on these big American trucks or anything running serious power.

Reason 1 — The Look ❤️
Twin snorkels have an aggressive, symmetrical look that a lot of our customers love. And on these big rigs it just looks the part 🤙

Reason 2 — Airflow & Restriction 💨
The MAF sensor on these big trucks can range anywhere from 4” up to 5”, this is the volume of air the vehicle needs to run efficiently without throwing engine codes or choking the engine. In some cases there is physically not enough room inside the guards to run the right size plumbing from a single snorkel to the airbox. Plumbing up two snorkels gives you more than enough airflow to keep things running properly.

Reason 3 — Equalised Airflow ‼️
Running both snorkels balances the air between the two, slowing the volume drawn through each one. This eliminates the annoying induction wind noise 😨 but amplifies the engine and turbo sounds, creating a completely different driving experience👍

Reason 4 — Don’t Waste a Snorkel 💵
Stainless snorkels aren’t cheap. A “Bluetooth” snorkel, connected to nothing! is purely cosmetic. If you’re spending the money, you would think you’d want it to actually do something.

Twin snorkels aren’t for every vehicle.
Most vehicles running MAF sensors operate between 50–93mm. That is the choking point — the maximum air the engine can physically draw. For most of those vehicles, a single 4” (100mm) snorkel is more than enough.

🔥 What about engine bay heat?
Crossover pipes on twin snorkels run over the engine and can heat up. Some say this costs horsepower! yes, you might lose 2hp 😂 We’re building snorkels for 4WDs, not supercars. 2hp is negligible….
