University projects are some of the most challenging acoustic environments to design well.

Think about it—within a single building you might have lecture theatres, study spaces, libraries, tutorial rooms, collaborative hubs and staff offices, all with completely different acoustic requirements.

A lecture theatre needs clear speech projection.
A study space needs focus.
A library needs quiet without feeling sterile.
A collaborative area needs conversation without becoming overwhelming.

That's why there's rarely a single acoustic product that solves everything.

The best outcomes come from designing acoustics around how each space is actually used—combining different ceiling treatments, wall applications and absorption levels to suit the activity taking place.

One thing we've seen across projects with Melbourne University, Victoria University and La Trobe is that successful acoustic design starts with understanding the space, not selecting the product.

Because education projects aren't one acoustic brief.

They're multiple acoustic environments operating under the same roof.

Are you working on a campus, education or learning space project? We'd love to hear how you're approaching acoustics.

When fire rating changes are made after the specification stage of a project, it can put pressure on both compliance and design intent.

For this multi-level lobby project, the required fire rating changed from Group 3 to Group 1 and 2, which meant the acoustic and decorative solution had to be reviewed.

After assessing the drawings, our team adjusted the design using selected veneer finishes, black core MDF, and AUS Fins / AUS Slats across the main lobbies of two buildings.

The project covered 13 levels and included detailed areas around doors, ceiling height changes, lift buttons, and other junctions.

The final result was a compliant acoustic and decorative solution that supported the updated fire rating requirements while keeping the original architectural intent intact.

Complex brief. Changed requirements. No compromise on finish.

At Acoustic Panels Australia, we always deliver acoustic panel solutions that meet compliance requirements while protecting the original design intent.

Before specifying an acoustic product on a commercial project, there are a few important questions worth asking early.

Here are 3 questions we think every specifier should ask:

1️⃣ Is the product tested under AS/NZS ISO 9705-2003?
Not an overseas equivalent or translated test standard.

2️⃣ Can the supplier provide the full fire test report?
Not just a marketing datasheet or summary.

3️⃣ Is the product designed for Australian compliance requirements?
Imported systems can sometimes require additional verification or testing locally.

The reality is, many acoustic products can look almost identical in renders or sample boards but behave very differently from a compliance perspective.

And usually, if a supplier avoids answering these questions clearly… that tells you everything you need to know.

If you’d like a second opinion on a spec, product or compliance detail, feel free to reach out to our team.

Before specifying an acoustic product on a commercial project, there are a few important questions worth asking early.

A lot of products can look similar on the surface, especially imported options but compliance performance can vary significantly once the project reaches certification stage.

There are three sounds in almost every modern workplace that quietly kill concentration — and none of them are actually that loud.

1️⃣The constant HVAC hum
You stop consciously hearing it after a while… but your brain doesn’t. Constant low-level noise still creates fatigue over time.

2️⃣The kitchen interruption
The kettle. Coffee machine. Microwave beep. Small sounds that completely break focus for an entire section of the office.

3️⃣The “second conversation”
One nearby conversation is manageable. Two? Your brain keeps trying to follow both at once — even when you don’t want it to.

The problem usually isn’t volume.
It’s reverberation.

Modern interiors are full of hard reflective surfaces — glass, concrete, plasterboard, polished floors — so sound lingers much longer than people realise.

That quick kitchen noise doesn’t just happen for 4 seconds. In a reflective space, it hangs around the room and competes with everything else.

Good acoustic treatment changes that.
Not by making spaces silent — but by reducing how long sound lives in the room.

The result? Spaces feel calmer, conversations become clearer, and people can actually focus again.

Which one is the biggest distraction in your workplace right now?

For the Alibaba office fit-out, the brief was simple:

Create a workplace that supports focused work, collaboration, and video calls in the same space. The ceiling needed to do a lot more than just look good.

Over 320 sqm of custom-finished perforated Birch ceiling tiles were installed throughout the workspace to help manage noise, reduce echo, and improve speech clarity across the floor.

In open-plan and hybrid workplaces, the ceiling is often the most effective place to introduce acoustic treatment. It's one of the largest uninterrupted surfaces in the room and can significantly improve acoustic comfort without impacting the overall design aesthetic.

By combining acoustic ceiling treatment with targeted wall applications around meeting and call zones, the result was a workplace that performs just as well as it looks.

It's a good reminder that some of the most effective acoustic solutions are the ones people barely notice.

Working on a workplace project where acoustics matter? We'd be happy to share the full case study.👇

Delivering Acoustic Performance at Quay Quarter Tower IGA

We’re proud to showcase our recent contribution to the Quay Quarter Tower IGA—a project that reflects the power of collaboration and tailored acoustic solutions.

In partnership with Craig & Co, who sought a fire-rated acoustic product that didn’t compromise on design, Acoustic Panels Australia delivered the AUS Perforated range with a Melamine finish. This option provided not only the fire compliance required but also exceptional sound absorption, enhancing the comfort and aesthetics of the space.

The result?

A sleek, modern fit-out that balances design appeal with functionality, supporting a premium customer experience in one of Sydney’s landmark retail spaces.

Thank you to Craig & Co for the seamless collaboration—we look forward to delivering more innovative solutions together.
