Stawell Steps is a landmark community project initiated by Professor Nigel Bertram through Monash Art, Design and Architecture (MADA).

Completed in 2012 on the banks of Cato Lake, the project was designed by Japanese architect Hiroshi Nakao alongside Monash Architecture students, and constructed in partnership with the Northern Grampians Shire Council.

Serving as both flood spillway infrastructure and a civic gathering place, it’s a brilliant example of how design can enrich regional communities.

We were proud to donate our classic Red Blue bricks, made at our brickyard just down the road, to help bring the project to life.

Since 1945, Stawell has been the home of Krause Bricks. Three generations of our family have been raised here, and it’s where we continue to craft our bricks today. Supporting community initiatives like this is one small way to give back to a town that has given us so much, and it’s a thrill seeing future architects and builders create something enduring for the local community.

At the University of Melbourne, Krause Classic 76mm Bricks in Heritage Red bring a warm, rich tone to a place with generations of history.

Introducing Heatherlie, our latest brick profile.

Designed to celebrate the raw, honest character of natural clay, Heatherlie features torn, fissured faces and soft, broken edges that bring an authentic, textural quality to any wall.

With a 215 x 110 x 75mm profile, it balances traditional proportions with an unmistakably tactile presence.

Heatherlie was selected by Studio Goss to highlight their incredible Cape Schanck House. Featured inside and out, the nuanced finish and imperfect edges bring a grounded, tactile warmth to the home’s sculpted, minimalist forms.

As above, so below.

At C.F Row in Fitzroy, Krause 76mm Paving Tiles in Red Blue run through the internal laneways, reproducing the look and colour of the brick overhead.

The award-winning apartments match vertical brick and horizontal tile to tie the new building to the neighbourhood's history. The same material and palette run from the ground up.

Making bricks in Stawell, Victoria since 1945, regional architecture is close to home for us. RAA brings together over 250 architects and practitioners from more than 160 practices across regional Australia, supporting one another to strengthen the practice of architecture, advocate for a better built environment, and connect communities with the places they live.

At Sawtell Residence, a curved Krause brick stairwell catches the light pouring in from above, while a warm timber staircase winds its way up through the void. A striking entryway taking form, one brick at a time.

Huge congratulations to the team behind 24/7 Latelab at Swinburne University of Technology, winner of the Horbury Hunt Commercial Award at the 2026 Think Brick Australia Awards.

This adaptive reuse project transforms an underutilised, four-storey campus building into a vibrant, student-centred learning and social hub, proving that existing assets can deliver real amenity while significantly cutting embodied carbon. Krause Classic 76mm and Custom Shapes in Ghost rearticulate the north-facing façade in carbon-neutral brick, giving the building a renewed civic presence - and that same material language carries inward, integrated into joinery and seating throughout.

As the jury put it: "24/7 Latelab exemplifies the essence of re:form. There is such complexity in this adaptive reuse, with the project harnessing the expressive potential of brickwork to breathe new life into the building, creating an outcome that is both innovative and enduring."
