During a time of war and the need for Communities to band together in times of need a public meeting was held at the Highton Hall on the 8th of January, 1944 to form a Fire Brigade in the Highton district. The Highton Bushfire Brigade was born. At this time a Royal Commission was held into the disastrous 1939 Black Friday fires. The Royal Commission recommend a single firefighting authority for c

ountry Victoria, bringing together the Bush Fire Brigades, Country Fire Brigades and Forest Commission. The Country Fire Authority commences on 2 April 1945. A brigade meeting in 1946 discussed a grant for a building to house equipment and in 1946 a block of land was purchased at 16 North Valley Road, Highton. For 10 years the Highton Fire Brigade had very basic fire fighting equipment and no vehicle. The first fire fighting unit issued to the brigade was a region spare which was stationed at Highton in 1956. The current fire station was constructed on the site of the original shed in 1970. Today our volunteer members are on call 24hrs a day and selflessly give their time to serve the Community and assist whenever an emergency arises. The Highton Fire Brigade has sent crews to all major campaign fires including Black Saturday and also turn out in support of full time firefighters in Geelong. We are dedicated to the protection of life and property and take great pride in knowing that our presence in the community is greatly appreciated.

🔥 Home Fire Safety Visits 🔥

Following a recent house fire in our area, our volunteers have been out in the community conducting Home Fire Safety Visits to support residents and help improve household fire safety.

Over the past two days, 4 of our amazing volunteers have been door‑knocking across Highton to chat with locals, offer safety advice, check smoke alarms, and provide essential fire‑safety equipment where needed.

Here’s what we achieved:
🏡 Properties visited: 66
👥 People engaged: 76
🔥 Fire blankets provided: 28
🔔 Smoke alarms installed: 2 (Everyone else’s were working and not older than 10 years!)

As a reminder, working smoke alarms save lives. CFA recommends:
đź”” Test your smoke alarms monthly
🧹 Clean them at least once a year (to clear dust and keep sensors effective)
♻️ Replace every 10 years, regardless of how they appear to be working

These visits are all about helping our community stay safe. Simple measures—like having a working smoke alarm or keeping a fire blanket in the kitchen—can make a huge difference in an emergency.

A big thank you to the residents who took the time to chat with us. Your willingness to engage helps strengthen the safety and resilience of our community.

If you’d like more information on home fire safety, please reach out to us or visit the CFA website.

💨 It’s going to get Smokey! 💨

We’re expecting a wind change this afternoon which is going to see smoke over Geelong yet again, here are some good tips to look after yourself!

Bureau of Meteorology are advising a wind change this afternoon could bring smoke to areas northeast of Otway.
Poor air quality is expected in Geelong, Melbourne and beyond.

Follow these 7 steps to keep yourself safer from smoke:
💨minimise time outside and skip hard exercise if you’re coughing or short of breath.
đź’¨close windows and doors and set your air-con to recirculate
đź’¨use your HEPA air purifier if you have one
đź’¨avoid burning candles, incense, and smoking.
đź’¨wear a P2/N95 mask if you must go outside
đź’¨if it is safe consider going to a place with cleaner air + air-con (like a library or shopping centre).
đź’¨bring your pets and their bedding inside with clean water and food.
đź’¨aerate your home after the smoke is gone, if safe to do so.

Most importantly there is help if you need it:
call NURSE-ON-CALL 1300 60 60 24 for advice.
call 000 if anyone has trouble breathing or chest pain/tightness.
