This popped up on my FB as 12 years ago today. That was the start of my great Australian adventure. A lot has changed since then and I couldn’t be happier.

Some progress on getting the new workshop operational. Some setbacks also…a pesky leak in the roof has been hard to locate but fingers crossed it has been found and will be fixed soon. As soon as I know the room is watertight I can put the machinery in place and actually get back to making guitars. . . . .

Fret crowning. I don’t have a fancy crowning file...Maybe I should, but for now I have a 3 corner file with safety edges ground in. It does give me control over the profile and I don’t mind the work. It takes me around an hour, it depends on how much has been taken off in levelling. Every time I do it I get a little faster at achieving the same result.

If you guitar people out there don’t have a spokeshave I would implore that you get one. They are a little finicky and a challenge to sharpen but the make short work of bringing a neck to size. I just contour around the first fret and before the heel and then use the spokeshave to fill in the gaps. You have to pay attention to grain but it is super satisfying to hear that crisp swoosh and see the shavings fall to the ground, and best of all it takes shavings so no dust.

Hand winding your feet bending jig? Ain’t nobody got time for that! The more time I save bending frets it’s more time I can spend sanding later 😫

Another glamour shot, I just love blackwood. We are lucky in this country to have some of most beautiful timber. This is a lot heavier than any other tele I have played with the old guard pickups it screams like a tele should in the bridge and in the neck there is a more pronounced mid range. I can’t wait until I am allowed to hang out with other people hear how this sits in the mix.
