🎙️ Last Friday I had the pleasure of joining Eddie Williams on ABC South East NSW to discuss the opportunities and challenges of prefabricated housing in Australia.

At Alpine PassivHaus, we manufacture prefabricated wall, roof, and floor panels right here in the Snowy Mountains, creating healthy, sustainable, high-performance homes.

We discussed how prefabrication can deliver:
âś… Higher quality through factory-controlled manufacturing
âś… Faster construction by producing panels while site works are underway
âś… Greater reliability with fewer weather delays
âś… Reduced waste and more efficient use of skilled trades
âś… Long-term cost savings through standardised, pre-engineered designs

We also discussed some of the challenges facing the industry, including outdated inspection processes, access to finance, and the difficulties smaller manufacturers face in accessing larger government housing projects.

A positive development is the introduction of dedicated prefab home loans, such as the Commonwealth Bank's prefab finance offering, which better reflects how off-site construction works and helps support industry growth.

Thank you to Eddie Williams and ABC South East NSW for the opportunity to talk about the future of prefabrication, sustainable housing, and Australian manufacturing.

A big thank you to the NSW Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development for the opportunity to participate in the Regional Business Improvement Program (RBIP).

Over the past days, our team at Alpine PassivHaus has been involved in Lean training, workshops, and an operational audit process designed to help regional businesses strengthen capability, improve systems, and build long-term resilience.

For us, the most valuable part of this program is not the tools or processes — it’s the opportunity to continue building a strong culture of continuous improvement and team ownership.

At Alpine PassivHaus, we believe that great buildings start with great people. Creating healthy, sustainable, high-performance homes requires more than good design and materials — it requires a team that is engaged, empowered, and constantly learning.

The workshops encouraged open discussions across the team, challenged us to look at our processes differently, and gave everyone an opportunity to contribute ideas for improvement. Building these capabilities within the team will help us create better systems, improve communication, reduce waste, and strengthen our ability to scale.

A special thank you to Ivan from Orbis for facilitating the sessions and creating an environment where ideas, collaboration, and continuous improvement could thrive.

We’re excited to continue this journey together and to keep building not just better homes — but a stronger team and culture behind them.

Mould Is the Real Problem — Airtightness Is the Solution 🏡
When we talk about buildings, we often focus on energy efficiency.
But the real issue in many Australian homes isn’t energy.
It’s health.
And at the centre of it is one thing:
Mould.
At a recent building conference, Alexx Stuart put it bluntly:
👉 “Mould is the new asbestos.”
Because of its hidden nature and its long-term impact on health.
🎥 Watch her talk here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0bC8zK3qZ7g
Mould doesn’t just “appear”. It is the result of moisture building up inside the structure of a home often hidden in walls and roofs where you can’t see it. And the main cause of that moisture?
👉 Uncontrolled air movement.
In a typical home, warm, humid air (especially in winter) is constantly leaking through gaps in the building envelope. That air enters walls and roof cavities, cools down, and releases moisture. Over time, this creates the perfect conditions for mould growth.
👉 And if the building can’t dry out, the problem only gets worse.
That’s why airtightness must always be combined with a vapour-open exterior — allowing any incidental moisture to safely escape.
👉 The result?
• Mould forming inside walls and ceilings — often unnoticed
• Poor indoor air quality affecting breathing and wellbeing
• Increased exposure to allergens, spores and pollutants
• A home that becomes unhealthy to live in
đź’ˇ Airtightness is about stopping moisture at its source
By creating an airtight layer on the inside of the building, we prevent warm, moisture-laden air from entering the structure in the first place.
No air movement → no hidden condensation → no mould risk inside the fabric.
But there is a second, equally important part:
👉 A vapour-open exterior
✔ Airtight on the inside → keeps moisture out
✔ Vapour-open on the outside → allows drying
👉 This is how you create a building that stays dry.
🏗 How we build at Alpine PassivHaus
At Alpine PassivHaus, airtightness isn’t an afterthought — it’s designed into the system from the start.
• Continuous airtight layer on the inside of the building envelope
• Prefabricated panels manufactured under controlled factory conditions in the Snowy Mountains
• Precise sealing of all junctions, penetrations, and interfaces on site
• Vapour-open external assemblies to allow safe outward drying
👉 The result is a building envelope that doesn’t just perform well — it is engineered to stay dry, healthy, and durable over the long term.
đź’§ Dry buildings are healthy buildings
Without moisture, mould cannot grow. And without mould, you create a home with:
• Clean, controlled indoor air
• Reduced allergens and pollutants
• A safer environment for people with asthma or sensitivities
🔥 Energy efficiency is just a bonus
👉 Airtightness isn’t about sealing a house shut.
It’s about protecting your health by controlling moisture.
Because in the end, a home should do one simple thing:
Keep you dry, mould-free, and healthy.
