I am sitting on the Esplanade in Cairns reflecting on the last 5 days ๐ŸŒด๐ŸŒด๐ŸŒด Wowee - it was a different crowd and a lot of different content to what Iโ€™m usually exposed to at conferences but it was so worth it. I learned a lot about mechanical systems and indoor air.

Itโ€™s crazy to me, in both commercial and residential contexts, how much effort and expense goes into controlling this invisible stuff all around us and all of the things it carries. How much of an impact air has on every part of a building. Thank you again SO much to the entire AIRAH IAQ tech committee for a huge 5 daysโ€ฆ. Everything went without a hitch and thatโ€™s no small feat.

It was amazing to meet Dr Joseph Lstiburek and ask him questions, workshop details and consolidate my knowledge.

Read on for my three main takeaways from this conference:
1. People need to breathe, walls do not.

I already knew this one, but this belief is SO pervasive. In a timely manner, a friend of mine who lives in Cairns even said that all the big windows in her house allowed it to โ€œbreatheโ€ after dinner last night - but after 5 huge days, I didnโ€™t have the brain space to explainโ€ฆ save that for another dinner ๐Ÿ˜„
1. Fresh air does not necessarily equal outdoor air.
Outdoor air carries fine and ultra fine particulates, pollen, moisture, smells, dust, mould spores and during bushfire season - smoke. Opening the windows for โ€œfresh airโ€ doesnโ€™t mean youโ€™re actually getting fresh air.
1. Code compliance is the floor (or the flawโ€ฆ) not the ceiling.
The mechanical game is as plagued by minimum compliance as the envelope game - in fact I think itโ€™s worse. The minimum standards ainโ€™t anywhere near good enough but people donโ€™t want to spend a dollar more than they have to, leading to poor outcomes for buildings and for the people inside.

Test 1: 19.95 ACH = 30 year old existing house, losing all its conditioned air to outside about one per hour on an average day (every 60 minutes), highly subject to outside pollutants, natural ventilation only, highly uncomfortable occupants

Test 2: 1.5 ACH = new home, designed for energy efficiency, loses its conditioned air to outside every 13.3 hours (798 minutes), has a HRV, designed for comfort and delivers
