First post for a while, this caravan came in needing a service and customer noted that the brakes were not up to scratch
Upon initial inspection -
*First problem, backing plates not mounted square, this causes uneven wear on the shoes and can cause the brakes to drag
You can see in the photos the angle they were on leaving an outside lip on one shoe and an inside lip on the other shoe
*second problem was misalignment of the shoes on 2 backing plates also causes uneven wear and brakes to drag
*in general the drums were in poor condition and one was even cracked Also the magnet surface was too worn to try and install new magnets,if new magnets are installed on an uneven surface they will never work properly
So for this van it was time for all new running gear,(new drums, bearings and off-road backing plates)
To correct the backing plate misalignment I simply shimmed the two front bolts 0.8mm which was enough to correct the problem
After installing the new equipment there was no sign of any brake drag
I Pride myself on offering the best outcome possible, sometimes that means just starting from scratch instead of service/repair
