The Surgical Student Society of Melbourne is an organisation led by medical students from The University of Melbourne Medical School. As a subdivision representing the Northern Clinical School, we are passionate about fostering our medical students' interest in surgery. Whether it is through educational lectures, skill-based workshops or research opportunities, we aim to provide an exciting progra

m that cultivates interest in the different surgical specialities and establish professional networks with surgeons and surgical societies.

What a blast wrapping up the first semester‼️

We hosted a laparoscopy workshop last week led by Dr. Krinal Mori, Zainab, Laim, and Maggie 🐐🐐🐐🐐. We learned, practiced, and even held our own peg transfer competition 🤩. Shoutout to the winning duo, Aubrey and Ethan! 🏆

Our team was also busy scouting members for our Northern team for the laparoscopy competition later this year, so let us know if you’d like to join 👀

Thank you to everyone for an amazing semester, and get excited for more to come in the second half of the year!😆

Hello Northerners 🤗

Interested in minimally invasive surgery, but never got to give it a try? Well, FEAR NOT! SSSM-NH will be hosting a laparoscopy skills night where you can practice on laparoscopy models!

Awesome, right? Well it doesn’t stop there🤭🤭🤭

We will be having the 2025 best educator of Victoria, Dr. Krinal Mori🥳🥳 One of Northern’s amazing general surgery consultants! So not only will you have a blast but also be in safe hands!

SSSM-NH will be hosting another suturing event, but this time advanced!

We will be having our amazing surgical registrar teach us more advanced suturing skills (like the figure 8, subcutaneous stitches) and even securing a drain tube in! We’ll be tying into what we learned from the first suturing night and hand tying event. If you didn’t go to the previous events, don’t worry! We got you all!

Wow everyone‼️April has been a busy and exciting month for us🤩
We had a blast at our plastering workshop, with special thanks to Stephen, the legendary ED consultant, and Louis, an amazing ED reg for their time🥹

Our first session will focus on surviving a surgical rotation and how to use the EHR—essential skills to help you feel more confident on the ward.
We’ll be providing catering, so come along for a chill afternoon, some words of wisdom, and free food 🥪✨
