This was the third component of the screening we provided for this client at Moses Rock. Her outside living environment was directly exposed to the North West, which took advantage of the beautiful ocean views and afternoon sun, but with that, was also exposed to the howling sea breezes, winter storms, and beating summer sun. To achieve an elegant solution that would enable the space to be user-friendly in all seasons and weather, we collaborated with a retired local welder who put together the pivoting frames, and we supplied the timber. The end result was a highly flexible screen that can be adjusted to suit the seasons and mood of the moment.

When I first visited this customer at Moses Rock, her challenges were immediately obvious - a howling South-Wester would blow you over between the car port and the front door, then turn the house inside out as you tried to get in! Being close to our rugged coast is filled with beauty, but sometimes some taming may be necessary. She did not want to lose the view, but needed to cut down the wind and the sideways rain. This slatted Jarrah screen we provided endeavoured to find the happy medium and will age gracefully in the harsh, salty environment.

Tuart, a rare and exquisite timber, thrives on the coastal plains between Busselton and Perth. It has never been a commercially available timber due to its small habitat, so as a timber, it is as rare as it is beautiful. It is both extremely hardwearing and, at the same time, soft and buttery. With a hardness 30% tougher than Jarrah, and a grain so dense it's impossible to split with an axe, it was popular in the early days for butcher's blocks. However, in modern times, these qualities in combination with its light and beautiful texture make it a great choice for kitchen benchtops. We are lucky enough to have a reasonable quantity in stock, sourced exclusively from trees that have naturally fallen in winter storms on private land. Be sure to get in touch for your next project to see what our skilled in-house craftsman could bring to life from this stunning resource.

Just when we think we've done it all, there's always someone ready to present a new challenge, and this customer from Margaret River did not disappoint.

They were on town water, but their bushfire management plan stipulated they must have stored water, so he decided to double-purpose it as a swimming pool. The mission: Turn a prefabricated concrete tank into a natural-looking timber-clad pool that would blend into their bushland setting on the edge of the river. Whilst the angled ridges on the outer walls of the tank presented some fixing challenges, we found a way forward with an eye for the simplest possible aesthetic, and this was the result.

A few years back, the WA Government announced that they would be ending timber harvesting in our native forests for good, thereby closing an industry that had supplied one of the highest quality and resilient hardwoods the world has known, to the world, for almost 200 years.

Fortunately, at Yallingup Timber Co we had procured a large quantity of stock just prior to the announcement, which has enabled us to stay in business for the past few years, and that will keep us going for a few years yet. It is an honour to be stewarding timber from the south west, into creative projects for people in the south west, so that our heritage can be enjoyed by our community for many decades to come.

48x23mm bevelled edge decking ready for delivery. The quality of jarrah in our 50x25mm feedstock is very good. Hardly any feature. Good lengths. And very useful for a wide range of applications.

Brendan from New Earth Living Homes consistently approaches me with new ideas he'd like to explore, and this screening for a home in Margaret River is one of them. As with all new ideas, sometimes simple concepts can present interesting challenges. After some trial and error, I figured out how to get the panels to come together perfectly, and I am very happy with the results. Manufactured in my workshop and installed by Brendan's skilled carpenters, this project exemplifies our collaborative relationship.

Jarrah fence pickets..... Hardly exciting woodworking, but every business needs its bread and butter jobs between the creative ones, and it's always satisfying to see the beauty of a hardwood jarrah fence gracing a property rather than unsightly colorbond or shabby pinelap.

As this job was in Perth the client organised a local installer to erect the fence, and from all reports, it went very smoothly. I didn't make it there to take photos for about 4 months, so these photos are also a record of the aging process. The oil used was Lanotec timber seal - a natural sheep's derived oil that results in a smooth natural finish that greys off evenly over time. The contrast between the colour in the workshop and that in these photos gives an idea of its slow transition to a beautiful silver sheen.

This client from Perth reached out wanting a custom pool fence that would be half glass, half timber, replacing a pre-existing pool fence, so it needed to integrate with the existing foundation materials. It was a bit out of the box from my usual, but I'm always up for something new. These photos were taken in the workshop just after oiling.
