Redwood Drive Reserve is nearing the end of construction. This neighbourhood park upgrade in Meadow Heights delivers a new perimeter/circuit pathway, half multi-sports court incorporating netball, basketball and 4 square, play equipment to suit toddlers through to teens, enabling single user and multi-user play, and a level kick about area with soccer goals. From what was a sloping site with aged equipment and a basketball key, with a single cut through pathway, the upgrade provides the opportunity for local residents of all ages, gender and abilities to stay longer and benefit from being able to recreate locally. Construction by Excell Gray Bruni, designed for Hume City Council.

I know it’s going to be a great day when I get to put my gum boots on and go outside instead of sitting at my desk. Today, members of LDI were invited for an in -person tour of Phillip Johnson’s recreated award winning 2013 Chelsea Flower Show Garden at Dandenong Ranges Botanical Garden, Olinda. Phil explained the physical and bureaucratic challenges of building the initial garden in Chelsea, and then finding funding and sponsors to up scale it (20 times the size) for the Olinda site. The billabong is filled with runoff from site, and the design nestles really beautifully into its surroundings. It’s really worth the trip. Onto Kuranga Native Nursery for a delicious lunch and hours of ogling beautiful plants. Thanks to Jodi (Director LDI, Vic ) for organising a great day for LDI members to connect, learn and be inspired.

With MIFGS in full swing and Melbourne turning on its best, it’s always satisfying to see the crowds turn out to admire horticulture and showcase landscape design. Highlights were the STEM Landscape Architecture ‘Through the looking glass’ and Peter Donegans ‘A moment in time’ where we were given a special behind the scenes peak into the hut of a war veteran. Besides many smaller installations where students get to showcase new talent, we enjoyed the Wurundjeri biik garden designed by Andrew Laidlaw with special artistic interventions by the ever resourceful and talented David Wong (refer umbrella crows in the images!). Thanks to Jodi from LDI for organising the industry walk around where we could chat to the designers of the gardens and hear about their road to the final product. It’s always a great week to connect with industry colleagues and friends.

In 2021, I provided a high level site Masterplan for this large established block in Highton, Geelong. With sweeping views out the back over the bay and Kardinia Park and a gorgeous 1960’s brick residence where I imagined cocktail parties on the terrace, the potential is massive. The plan includes a fire pit out the back, making the most of the views and terracing to the garden to create a flat area for kick about for the kids. The client is project managing the build and has a great start on the front entrance landscape. It helps when you have talented and experienced contractors on board. A shout out to .stone masonry for the Castlemaine slate walling and for the bamstone paving. Beautiful work!

It is rewarding to see this play space in Port Campbell, settle into its surrounds as the plantings mature and the timbers grey off. Designed in 2019, these images are courtesy of visitvictoria.com. Drop by next time you are down in this beautiful part of Victoria.

I was fortunate this weekend to be part of a trekking group to Mt Kosciusko, via Charlotte Pass. My mind was blown by the beauty of the alpine landscape, with 360 degree views of our vast and gorgeous country, delicate alpine plants in flower and the drifts of snow in January. 24kms travelled to an elevation of 2228m…..apparently this is a beginners peak. Tell that to my feet and legs! What an experience………

In 2016 I had the privilege of working on a planting plan for the edge treatment of Lake Joanne, Castlemaine Botanic Gardens in conjunction with the late Sue Price. Following the floods of 2011 the lake edge was ‘engineered’ to mitigate future flooding and rock beaching installed to the entire perimeter of the lake. The brief was to soften the effect of the rock beaching, whilst not altering it. 6 years on and the plants are starting to come into their own…..with some hindrance from the resident ducks!

Apex Park in Camperdown was a project undertaken with 2MH in 2012 in close collaboration with Corangamite Shire Council. Constructed in stages, the park was finally finished in 2015. The park pays homage to the unique local geology and bird life of the area and it was a joy getting down to the details to lift this park from the everyday to the unique. Well worth a stop in your travels out west.

Errington Reserve in St Albans is looking a treat following 12 months growth. It was a joy to work on a local project in conjunction with 2MH Consulting and Freeform Architects. The reserve now boasts 4 new tennis courts, 1 multi-purpose court, new picnic facilities, new pavilion and oval to serve the local community. I threw some photos in of the streetscape upgrade leading to The Bowery Theatre built in honour of Leigh Bowery and sits on the western fence line to Errington Reserve. If you are in need of some fresh produce, Sams market is to the west….all this infrastructure within a 2 minute walk of st Albans train station

With Xmas nearly upon us, planning is well underway for the City of Hume Xmas displays 2021. Here’s some memories from our 2020 installation at Broadmeadows, popping with gorgeous annuals.

It’s been 10 years since my installation at Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show. Winning a bronze in the show garden category I was thrilled to beat some big names. With a budget of $3000 and sponsored by LIAV it shows you don’t necessarily need a big budget to achieve something wonderful. Skilfully installed by Joel and Dave from InStyle Gardens. I can’t wait until events such as MIFGS return to our wonderful city.
