🚨 MORE "FAKE NEWS" SPRAY FOAM CLAIMS THAT NEED CONTEXT
Not every bold online statement tells the whole story. Here’s what homeowners should know:
💧 CLAIM: “Closed-cell foam prevents damp, mould and mildew.”
THE FACTS: This is completely overstated.
No insulation product can prevent every moisture or mould problem. Plumbing leaks, ground moisture, drainage, thermal bridging, indoor humidity and ventilation all play a part.
Insulation and airtightness can help manage condensation—but only when they form part of a properly designed building system.
🏠 CLAIM: “Closed-cell foam strengthens your house.”
THE FACTS: Context matters.
Rigid closed-cell foam may add strength within particular tested building assemblies. However, it is not a substitute for compliant framing, bracing or structural engineering.
Any structural claim should identify the exact product, tested assembly and evidence accepted under the NCC.
🔥 CLAIM: “Open-cell foam has a fire rating of zero.”
THE FACTS: This is misleading and irrelevant to subfloor application.
NO Spray foam has one universal Australian “fire rating.” Performance depends on the exact product, test method and complete building assembly.
For eg. when tested under AS 1530.3, Icynene LDC-50 open cell foam achieved a flame-spread index of 0 on the relevant 0-10 scale. That does not mean it has a general “fire rating of zero.”
Icynene LDC-50 is CodeMark and BCA certified for its specified uses inlcuding in subfloors and is subject to the installation and building-system requirements of its certification.
🌬️ CLAIM: “Only closed-cell foam creates an air seal.”
THE FACTS: 100% Incorrect.
Icynene LDC-50 open-cell foam forms a continuous air barrier when installed at the specified thickness. Airtightness is not exclusive to closed-cell foam.
💰 CLAIM: “Closed-cell foam automatically improves air quality and pays for itself.”
THE FACTS: No spray foam can actually give this guarantee.
Airtightness can improve comfort and reduce uncontrolled heat loss, but indoor air quality also depends on ventilation, moisture control and indoor pollutant sources.
Claims about guaranteed savings or payback should be supported by project-specific modelling or monitored results—not marketing statements.
✅ The right insulation should be selected according to the building, climate, application and moisture conditions.
At SprayIT Solutions, we install both open-cell and closed-cell foam. Our advice is based on what suits the project—not on promoting one product for every situation.
