Today I ran this piece of mixed Australian hardwood through the thicknesser. I’m pretty sure I know what species it is, but it’s hard to tell. It’s pretty blonde, kind of light brown as well, and it’s got some yellow tinges here and there.

Can you guess what it is?

Sometimes salvage doesn’t come from an old building. Sometimes nature creates it. 🌳🌪️

This absolute giant of a Blackbutt came down during Cyclone Alfred, and we’ve been lucky enough to salvage these enormous barrels from the trunk.

You can see Rex inspecting the growth rings, getting a glimpse into just how many years of history are sitting inside this tree. And with the barrels taking up most of the truck… these are some serious whoppers.

Now comes the exciting bit: figuring out what they can become.

Big slabs? A statement table? Something completely unexpected?

Whatever it is, we reckon there’s another chapter waiting inside. 🪵✨

Will’s been helping us out at Solid Grain lately, and this is one of his recent builds: a set of chunky reclaimed hardwood steps and landing for a tiny house.
