Donald Trump's fascist ICE enforcers ignite a horrifying new scandal by detaining a Marine Corps veteran's wife even though she's still breastfeeding their 3-month-old baby.
Veteran Adrian Clouatre's wife Paola's was detained last month as part of Trump's escalating crackdowns on nonviolent immigrants. This innocent father has been forced to give his 3-month-old daughter Lyn baby formula now that her mother is no longer around to breastfeed. At night, he has to tell his 2-year-old son Noah that "Mama will be back soon" even though he doesn't know if and when she will be.
Clouatre is understandably concerned that his newborn will have long-term bonding problems from being denied crucial skin-to-skin contact with her mother.
Paola's detention happened despite the fact that Marine Corps recruiters regularly promote enlistment as protection for family members who are undocumented. Under Trump, those crucial protections have been stripped way in order to meet arbitrary deportation quotas. Worse still, the federal agency that once helped military families obtain legal status has now been tasked with betraying them by referring people for deportation.
"I think it's bad for them to be advertising that people are going to get immigration benefits when it appears that the administration is no longer offering these immigration benefits," said military immigration law expert Margaret Stock. "It sends the wrong message to the recruits."
If he wants to see his wife, Clouatre — who is a service-disabled veteran — must now make an 8-hour round trip to an ICE detention center. His wife is 25 and came to the country with her mother seeking asylum over ten years ago. She has been trying to obtain a green card for years but the process was derailed by ICE when her mother, who she has been estranged from for years, failed to shop up for an immigration hearing.
At a hearing for her green card application, she was ambushed in the lobby in what her husband describes as a "ploy." She was handcuffed and taken away.
"I'm all for 'get the criminals out of the country,' right?" said Clouatre. "But the people that are here working hard, especially the ones married to Americans — I mean, that's always been a way to secure a green card."
"It's just a hell of a way to treat a veteran. You take their wives and send them back to Mexico?" said Carey Holliday, a former immigration judge representing the Clouatres.
The couple has filed a motion for a judge to reopen the case on Paola's deportation order. This is what Donald Trump's policies look like in action. Innocent lives are destroyed and our brave veterans are hung out to dry.
